Dear Editor,

There is no need for me to remind everyone that we are going through some very strange and stressful times. I am sure that everyone is coping in the ways that are best for them and for the health of our country, as we practice social distancing.

Although many things have changed, it is somewhat reassuring to open the Fort Frances Times every week and know that it is considered essential. I send my thanks to those that are keeping this paper going so smoothly. Several years ago I began to get my copy online and am more glad than ever that I have done that.

I don’t really know why I have not written a letter like this before now as the Times has always been very important in our home. I read nearly all of it most of the time, but I never miss reading one column, and that is “Moos From the Herd” by Kim Jo Bliss. I grew up on a small farm that was quite different to the way things are done now, but some things never change. (A favourite quote of mine says “I consider it the best part of an education to have been born and brought up in the country.” A.B. Alcott.) The work and worry, the constant watch on weather and interaction with the animals, the mud, planting, getting the crops in, the births – and deaths – are all brought back to me in her column. Two of my grandchildren worked at the station over the years and they will remember how I often asked for details of what was happening there.

This column is well done and always with such an under current of the good humour that is so needed in farming. I enjoy reading about the cattle sales and how Kim Jo keeps us up to date on what is going on in this very essential industry of farming. I don’t know how long she has been writing this, but I hope she keeps on.

I don’t think I have written a Letter to the Editor before, except for the ones I write in my mind and discard. But I felt I must say how thankful I am to the Times for giving Kim Jo an audience for her excellent writing.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Donaldson

Editor’s note: We’re quite fond of Kim Jo and her column too! We’re glad you like it!
