District needs transit

Judith Johanson

Dear editor,

The recent announcement of improved bus service from White River, through Thunder Bay to Winnipeg is welcome news to all for whom it is necessary to travel for medical and other reasons.
It is to be hoped that the government will now consider a similar plan for those in the Rainy River District who also need specialist treatment in Thunder Bay and Winnipeg or for those who have other reasons to travel to the larger centres. Not all are able to drive themselves, and it is not reasonable to expect the population in general to depend solely upon relatives, friends, or volunteer drivers to meet this need, even when these are available.
It should not be too much to expect access to some form of public transportation, preferably a full-sized bus with washroom facilities, at least several days a week. The current van service based in Thunder Bay does not meet this standard of service and is very expensive. The citizens of this area are tax payers in the province and are due the services provided in other areas.

Yours truly
Judith Johanson
