The “Loyal Opposition” may soon be known as the “Disloyal Opposition.”
With an ingenious tactic, namely acting as a coalition, the three parties forming the Opposition have caused the government to withdraw several “contentious” pieces of their platform.
If the three parties in Opposition now move to vote down the government, then these three depart from being the “Loyal” Opposition. The whole move becomes an undemocratic and unethical power grab.
I say this particularly in light of the fact that within days of the election, the leaders of the NDP and the Bloc were plotting to use the coalition tactic to bring the government down at the earliest possible time. With that in mind, the Opposition’s claim that they have lost all trust in the government lacks all credibility on their part.
Furthermore, Bloc leader Gilles Duceppe last week stated he is supporting the coalition because he believes it will assist him in advancing the cause of separation. That sounds not only like a very fragile coalition, but also one that is not at all in the interests of Canadians.
It is time for the parties to work for the benefit of the country. This is not a time for political mayhem.
