Dear Mike:
The Dance Fire Memorial committee would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended our unveiling on Friday, Oct. 10. It was gratifying to see so many people come out in support of our efforts to provide a lasting memorial to the 17 people who died in the Thanksgiving Day fire of 1938.
Unfortunately, we’ve already experienced a setback.
Our committee recently placed a digital wildlife camera at the site in order to monitor visitor activity. The camera was situated in a tree near the pavilion, locked in a large black metal box.
The box was on-site as of Wednesday, Oct. 29. But when committee members went to retrieve it on Sunday (Nov. 2), they discovered that the box and its contents were missing.
Police are investigating the incident.
We are very disappointed with the thoughtlessness of one or more individuals who felt it necessary to steal from a memorial dedicated to a tragedy 70 years ago.
If anyone has any information as to the whereabouts of the camera, it would be appreciated if they would contact Donna Haglin (482-2837), Karen Kellar (486-3657), or the OPP.
Thank you for your time.
(Signed),
Rosanne Farmer,
Dance Fire
Memorial committee
