Commendable column

Dear editor:
I just want to commend and thank Jim Cumming for the extraordinary column about Darrell Whitefield, a man I was proud to know as a colleague for seven years at the Times.
Jim showed enormous compassion and sensitivity for Darrell, who was always among the people I most missed when I left the Times. He was a true character and a good friend.
At the Times, I spent many hours chatting and laughing with Darrell, his brother, and his father, and truly a better group of men I’ve never yet met.
What Jim accomplished with his column was to show Darrell’s humanity and the strength he exhibited trying to deal with the weaknesses of being a human.
Great job, Jim. You did Darrell proud, and I know made some of your former employees equally proud of you.
