Dear editor:
I’m told the mill in Barwick has trouble getting wood and that Resolute has complete control of all our local Crown assets in the Crossroute Forest area.
If this is true, it would be wise to have all district councils seek to have representation with regards to the distribution of these district assets.
We also all know the history of Abitibi—at Prince George, B.C., Pine Falls, Man., Kenora, Ont., Liverpool, N.S., Dalhousie, N.B., Thunder Bay, Ont., and the Grand Falls, Nfld. fiasco.
Who really cleans up the mess after the “American Iron & Metal” scrap dealer leaves town? This chore once again will be put in the hands of the taxpayers, possibly.
Fort Frances needs the tax and aid dollars to rebuild our community; not to clean up the lagoon and all the chemicals that have leaked and dumped over the years.
This clean-up money should come from the selling of the mill’s scrapping.
The provincial government has to talk to the Newfoundland government about their fiasco. Town council has to request that the environmental people come in and start testing the site.
History tells us over and over again if the dam ships power to the U.S., then a paper mill has to be built here.
Well, the mill is down and scrap dealers’ trucks are leaving daily with the mill.
It’s time for the federal and provincial governments to start looking at this broken agreement the town agreed with years ago.
Thank you,
Ed Haglund
Fort Frances, Ont.
