Dear editor:
Thanks to the FFCBC committee for all of their long hours and hard work that is put into this great event, and not to forget all the numerous volunteers who give up their free time in the summer to help make this event possible.
I volunteered for the first two years of this event, then chose to participate as an angler.
Over the years I have seen the changes that have occurred. Rising costs in the economy is a major factor as to the reason there was not a full field this year.
The entry fee of $1,450 was introduced in 2006 to cover the cost of a deficit. To my knowledge, this was achieved, yet the cost to enter this tourney stayed the same, which is why I believe a lot of teams backed out this year, as well as the rising economy.
I was talking to other anglers and they seemed to agree with me.
Here is an idea that may get the full field next year: lower the entry fee back to $1,000; that extra $450 the anglers could use for fuel, lodging, etc.
This would mean a lower prize pay-out, but this is where the entry fee was in the first place. I know some anglers choose to stay in International Falls due to the lower cost of lodging, fuel, etc., which takes away from the local economy.
Crowds in attendance seemed to be down this year. A lot of the local folks come out to watch local anglers and see how they are competing against the pros. Less local anglers means less spectators, less spectators means less sales of concessions, which turns into less revenue gained to help sustain this great event.
I plan to fish in the 2009 tourney at Team #32, and hope to see this event continue on for years to come. But changes have to be made.
Thanks for the space and allowing me to express my views. I hope other anglers comment on these and other issues they may have.
Signed,
Guy Johnston
