If you are like me, the new fallen snow has rekindled your Christmas spirit. Saying that, I find this a most opportune time to write this letter in regards to a good cause that once again can use the help of our community.
In the fall of 2000, I began the “Mitts For Kids—Helping Hands” campaign in conjunction with the local Salvation Army’s Christmas hamper drive, where my staff and I collected donations of new pairs of mitts as well as monetary donations for the purchase of some.
The results over the past five years of this campaign have been high above expectations. We always have exceeded our goal in providing enough mitts for all the children in Rainy River District who receive a Christmas hamper from the Salvation Army.
In fact, for the last three years, we also have been able to provide enough mitts for all the children in the Couchiching Christmas hamper drive, along with providing mitts to Huffman School in 2004 for a pilot project called “Mitt Kits.”
Due to unforeseen personal circumstances, I have had to make a decision to hand over many of the responsibilities of this endeavour, and to quietly assist and accompany from the sideline.
I am excited to announce that the fundraiser now will be orchestrated and handled by the 2005 Fun in the Sun Queen and Princesses, and their co-ordinator, Melissa Gushulak.
Melissa has personal experience in this project as one of my past staff members. Her energy and love for this cause was an important contributing factor for our past success.
I am sure the enthusiasm of the girls—and their new ideas for campaigning—will be a huge asset.
Local businesses have been approached to display a “Mitts for Kids” donation box to help in the purchase of mitts for the Christmas hampers. I would like to take this time to thank all participating businesses and to ask everyone to be very generous with their “jingle.”
Anyone wanting more information on how to donate hand-made or store-bought mitts (hats and scarves, too) or to make a cash donation, or if you want to offer any fundraising ideas or help in any way, either as an individual or a group, you can contact Melissa at 274-5206 or myself at 274-0206.
Merry Christmas and God bless your kindness!
