Centennial planned

Dear sir:
The Our Lady of the Way Anniversary Committee will host a special celebration to commemorate the 100th birthday of Our Lady of the Way Parish in the town of Pinewood, Ont. on June 30-July 2, 2000.
The history of our parish dates back to 1896 when it began as a mission to Rat Portage (Kenora). In 1896, Fr. St. Amant was sent from Fort Frances to look after the Catholic residents of Pine River (now Pinewood).
He oversaw the construction of a log cabin church. On Sept. 21, 1898, the little church was blessed by Archbishop Adelard Langevin of St. Boniface and was dedicated to God’s service under the title “Our Lady of the Wayside,” Notre Dame du Chemin (an appropriate choice because both the voyagers and explorers passed by on their way to distant posts).
The church was blessed with a 300-pound bell on Aug. 10, 1899 and later that same year, an organ was acquired. On Oct. 31, 1900, the mission was established as a parish.
Throughout the years, the parish has been guided by 14 different priests; has seen the church undergo critical renovations; and has both welcomed and bid farewell to an abundance of individuals and families.
We invite former residents of Our Lady of the Way parish community to return to Pinewood to renew acquaintances with family, friends, and neighbours. The social committee is planning an active and fun-filled weekend.
