Boundless?

Dear editor:
When the Town of Fort Frances decided to brand itself as “Boundless,” I had no idea it was referring to articles of clothing.
I am assuming B93 The Border is a reliable source when reporting on its website that last Tuesday, an application for a “adult entertainment parlour” licence was approved—without debate.
The definition of such a business activity requiring this licence, according to Ottawa.ca, is “provides live entertainment or services appealing to erotic or sexual appetites. These are commonly known as ‘strip clubs.’”
I am not exactly sure what the appeal is to have this in our community but if the increasing of revenues is the motivator, as a pro‐capitalist, let me tell you why it’s a loser.
I am a local aspiring real estate investor, which means I look to invest my money—and other people’s money—into real estate. One of the biggest factors when looking to invest in property is fundamentals of the local market.
When establishments like this come into existence, it attracts the riff-raff of society into one place, and as such things like crime rates increase.
That is not good for investment.
As I understand it, this business is going to be located on the 200 block of Scott Street. That tells people like me to stay away from that area and not buy any vacant properties near that area because it will not be safe to put my money there.
I can appreciate the attempt of trying to maximizing our opportunities, but let’s not be so short-sighted that we forget the long-term liability of becoming a trashy community. Ideas have consequences.
Politics play a huge factor in decision-making when it comes to investors injecting money into a community. I know I am just one person, but investors like me are looking for stable markets.
We want to invest in predictable, crime-free, family-oriented communities with strong growth fundamentals.
It seems to me that the leadership of Fort Frances wants to just give up.
Perhaps my money, credit, and time is better spent at looking at other markets like Emo and beyond.
