To the Editor:
Twenty years ago, some forward-thinking individuals saw the benefit of having many sports facilities at the west end of town.
They also understood that groups working together could leverage services to serve the whole community in more efficient ways.
At that time, and in the years that followed, responsible town representatives recognized that the old tennis courts beside the Sportsplex no longer were safe—and it was unwise to spend money for repairs and upkeep when the plan was to build up-to-date courts in the west end.
Once again, there is an initiative to move forward with this project.
The local separate school board has donated land, town council has agreed to contribute $112,000, and a committee of dedicated individuals is working to access grants and raise money through donations.
The local public school board, meanwhile, has recognized that having four courts shared by both school boards and the wider community would be a huge benefit for all students and the public at large.
As a senior citizen who has never been active in sports, I will not be using the courts—but I strongly believe they should be built.
It is now accepted that an active lifestyle is to be recommended for all of us regardless of age, and that the skills and attitudes developed in our early years carry on.
School educational programs have changed to emphasize physical education and enjoyment for all students, not just the elite athletes.
There are many examples of buildings and services in our area that have come to be due to the co-operation of the town council, the Ontario government, the Canadian government, the boards of education, and committees of local citizens.
All of these make our town a place where people want to live. They show that in responding to the needs and expectations of all citizens, there is potential for the growth and development of Fort Frances and the surrounding area.
Now it is time for the tennis courts. The committee and the town have set up a dedicated bank account, and tax receipts are available for donors.
Local donors are coming on board. What is needed is a commitment from the local public board of education to come forward with not only an educational endorsement but with a firm financial commitment.
I say to all representatives of the public school board: the ball is in your court.
There has been 20 years of discussion and planning. Now is the time for commitment and action.
