Norm Guenette
Dear editor:
Let me get right to the point, and since it is playoff time, I will use a hockey analogy to make it clear.
At the town council meeting Monday evening, our councillors (or our town referees, if you would like to continue with the hockey analogy) simply made a bad call.
With the exception of two, they voted against proceeding with the new library/tech centre.
I fully realize that these are extraordinary times. But at the saying goes, extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.
Actually, building a new library at this time is exactly what this community needs; and the funds are there, thanks in large measure to the hard work of a few dedicated, forward-thinking individuals.
This is a missed opportunity, and would have been a real bargain for the town at this time.
According to CBC Radio and other surveys, it is a proven fact that in difficult economic times, a public library experiences a very significant increase in usage since people use the computers for job research, and realize they no longer can buy books but must borrow them.
In my view, these councillors demonstrated a lack of political will. Instead of turning the switch on a bright light for this community, they dimmed the lights even further.
A regressive move, I believe, and a “bad call.”
Signed,
Norm Guenette
