Amazing effrontery

Rudolf K.F. Zeitlhofer

Dear sir:
The unfortunate letter from the foreign gentleman printed in the Fort Frances Times of Sept. 14, advising Canadian how they should vote, is an amazing act of effrontery.
Imagine telling people in another country how they should vote based on his own prejudices.
What’s even more unfortunate is the misunderstanding of Ontario’s political system displayed by the writer. Our system is not analogous to that of the state of Minnesota and it is ignorant to assume that it is.
We have a multi-party system because our country is more open and democratic. The two-party system doesn’t seem to be working very well in the U.S. and advocating it adoption here seems very strange.
The comparison of Liberal candidate Anthony Leek to Jesse Ventura seems even more bizarre. To my knowledge, Anthony Leek has never been a professional wrestler, nor has he ever shaved his head, nor has he been on a reality TV show.
And he has not yet been governor of Minnesota.
The foreign letter-writer seeks to warn us about vote-splitting and keeping our election a two-party race, and wants us to vote for Sarah Campbell. But it is Campbell who represents the third party which has no hope of forming a government.
It is Anthony Leek who represents the governing party, which seems likely to form the government again. It is the Sarah Campbell vote that is a throw-away vote.
The foreign letter-writer states that Campbell “does have the experience to be an MPP.” Based on what criteria? She has never held elective office, unlike Anthony Leek.
Mr. Leek is owed a sincere apology from this person. I hope it is forthcoming.
Yours truly,
Rudolf K.F. Zeitlhofer
