A suggestion
Dear sir:
Permit me to suggest a reasonable method of handling the recent proposal to reconsider the provision of a benefits package to the mayor and councillors.
Table the issue until roughly two months prior to the next election and decide at that time if the incoming members should receive a benefits package similar to that enjoyed by town staff or the equivalent monetary value.
Make the result of your deliberations part of your election platform, providing voters with the opportunity to decide if your performance has been worthy of a 36 percent increase in compensation.
I hope my suggestion will be seriously considered.
