The local Fun in the Sun committee deserves a round of applause for once again putting on a Canada Day to remember.
How does it all happen? Well, money doesn’t hurt and the local Canada Day celebration got a boost from the community support it received through several fundraisers, as well as a shot in the arm from the Moffat Family Fund.
But more importantly, it takes die-hard volunteers to make plans and then execute them. Cynthia Donald, Cathy Richards, Joyce McCormick, Jill Howarth, Heather Gill, Nichole Lowey, and Dale Allan, as well as Dave Coats, who organizes the fireworks, are to be commended.
The number of core committee members is surprisingly low, but it needn’t be–and that’s where we can do our part if we want to see Canada Day activities continue here.
First off, if you see any of these individuals on the street this week or later this summer, make sure to say, “Thank you.” A few sincere, kind words can go a long way to letting our volunteers that what they do is noticed and appreciated.
Secondly, and just as importantly, consider getting involved as a Fun in the Sun volunteer.
After enjoying any community event, whether it be Canada Day activities, a Tour de Fort concert, museum gala, library book sale, or an event put on by a local service club, some of us might be feel inspired to consider being a volunteer in the future, to be a part of making it all happen next time around–and then we never act on it.
That’s why the time to step forward is now. Before the patriotic afterglow of July 1 wears off, contact the Fun in the Sun committee and let them know you would like to help next year.
Not only would more volunteers make it more feasible to hold a bigger and better celebration, but it might prevent the hard-working core group who helmed Fun in the Sun this year from burning out.
Maybe you want to be part of the committee, maybe you’d just like to help with setup and teardown before and after Canada. Either way, let them know.
Fun in the Sun has had its ups and downs over the years, and keeping the current momentum going is paramount to its ongoing success.
Of course, the same goes for Canada Day activities in communities across Rainy River District.
