Well, it’s been a slice.
Every year it feels like summer is over just a little bit faster than the year before. I’m pretty sure just a few weeks ago it was June, when the days were finally warm and the nights were comfortable enough to enjoy outside. It felt like the endless possibilities of summer were all laid out in front of us, and we had all the time in the world with which to enjoy them.
And now…
Kids are officially back to school. The days are noticeably cooler, to say nothing of the nights. The skies are getting gray in that way that only really happens in the fall. The leaves are changing. Pumpkin Spice Everything is back.
Truly, summer has come and passed.
A thing isn’t special because it lasts forever, and not everyone is the kind of person who would enjoy summer weather all year round. I’m more of a fall person myself, I enjoy the cooler nights and the changing colours and that bittersweet melancholy of autumnal walks through the woods. I’m also a fan of the spooky season, which by now we all agree begins in September and lasts at least a few days into November, right?
But there are others who can’t wait for the first flakes of snow to fall, those souls who take to the ice and trails to fish, drive snow machines, hit the trails for cross-country or downhill skiing.
We’ll remember summer for its bounties and that sense of freedom, the myriad events, festivals and fairs that come with it, but it will be here again before we know it, and before long we’ll open our doors to a sunny, warm morning, dew shining on mowed grass, the laughter of children bouncing down the street, that sense of endless possibility at hand once again.
