Sky’s the limit

Fort Frances has long considered itself a hockey town—and certainly we’ve had a number of players excel at the national and collegiate levels over the years. They now serve as tremendous role models for local youngsters suiting up in minor hockey knowing they, too, can succeed through hard work and determination.
It’s also wonderful to see success is not limited to the hockey arena. Local singer Wade “Brok_Homz” Friesen is about to launch his second CD, entitled “Afta Thoughts,” which he’ll showcase at a release party this coming Monday at the Ukrainian Hall here. Sarah Hebert similarly has been making waves on the music scene—and will hold a release concert with local band “The Faculty” on Tuesday at the Little Beaver Snow Park lodge to mark her debut album, “The Fall.”
Whether it’s in sports, the arts, business, or politics, the common thread is that where you come from is not an obstacle to fulfilling your dream. If you’re talented, and have the drive to succeed, then the sky’s the limit in terms of how far you can go.
Their success, though, is equally a tribute to all those who got them started here in our little home town. Perhaps it was a teacher at Fort High or one of the elementary schools, a parent who drove them to all the early-morning practices and rehearsals, or one of the many coaches who selflessly volunteer their time behind the bench or on the sideline so our children can hone their skills while learning life lessons.
Fortunately, those who have gone on to bigger and better things from here do remember their roots—crediting everyone who offered knowledge, support, and encouragement along the way.
The continued out-migration of our youth is bittersweet. It’s sad to see them go, but gratifying to know so many are enjoying such success in their chosen field no matter what it might be.
