Role models

Stratton residents, particularly those involved in the curling scene there, undoubtedly are very proud after two of their own—siblings Trevor Bonot and Jackie McCormick—helped Northern Ontario capture the 2017 Canadian mixed curling championship on Saturday in Yarmouth, N.S.
Joined by Megan and Kory Carr of Thunder Bay at lead and second, the quartet will be off to Champéry, Switzerland next October to represent Canada at the world championship.
An incredible journey, indeed, for a pair who got their start on the ice at the Stratton curling club all those years ago.
Their tremendous achievement obviously is a testament to the skills they honed moving up the ranks. But it’s also just the latest in a ever-growing list of athletes with local roots who have enjoyed the pinnacle of success in their respective sports.
Thanks to their efforts, Trevor and Jackie are excellent role models who hopefully spur more youths to participate in sports—not only for the benefits of exercise and building life skills such as teamwork and perseverance, but also knowing they can attain their dreams no matter where they may hail from.
In fact, the same holds true for whichever path youngsters choose to pursue—whether it’s athletics or in the arts, music, drama, or academics. The sky’s the limit if you work hard and dream big.
Congratulations to Trevor and Jackie on winning a national title, and best of luck as you look to conquer the world next fall!
