Real class act

There’s no “i” in team, as the old saying goes, and clearly it takes a tremendous group effort to stage an event like the annual Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship.
But the fact is, Gord Watson single-handedly rescued the bass tournament by stepping to the plate last fall to take over the reins from outgoing chairman Tom Fry. And judging by the response from anglers and spectators alike over the past week, he has all but assured there will be an 18th-annual edition next July.
Perhaps Mr. Watson would have made a different decision had he truly realized how much work heading the FFCBC entails, not to mention the huge time commitment at the expense of his personal life and day job. Yet his youthful enthusiasm and obvious belief in the importance of the tournament, along with bringing a fresh perspective to the table, was precisely what was needed to keep it afloat given its shaky financial outlook.
Mr. Watson’s steady leadership steered the board through the inevitable disputes that arise when so many people are involved in organizing a major event, and he deftly handled any curveballs tossed his way during the tournament itself, including the tough weather conditions on Day 3 and the first-ever tie for top spot.
It’s too bad that Mr. Watson lives in Alberton as he would be a slam-dunk choice as the next Citizen of the Year in Fort Frances. His actions and dedication embody what citizenship is all about, and were pivotal in saving a community event that brings so much economic benefit, publicity, and prestige to our town and Rainy Lake.
Perhaps council would consider an honourary award, or maybe present him with the “key” to the town, as a token of appreciation.
His class act certainly is deserving of such an honour.
Kudos to the entire FFCBC board of directors, along with all the sponsors and volunteers, for the success of this year’s tournament. Special thanks to Mr. Watson, though, for accepting the challenge and responsibility of being chairman—and pulling it off so well.
Hopefully, he is willing to take it on for another year.
