Granted, we don’t know who all the nominees were, but it’s hard to imagine the selection committee could have picked a more fitting choice as the town’s “Citizen of the Year” than Lin and Jean Boileau.
Town council evidently agreed, approving the choice unanimously at last night’s meeting.
The popular couple certainly are very familiar faces in Fort Frances, whether its spearheading fundraising efforts for the “Friends of the Library,” performing in skits to promote healthier lifestyles for our senior citizens, or selling tickets for the Kiwanis Club or some other worthy cause.
In short, the Boileaus epitomize what it means to be “citizens,” and Fort Frances is a better, richer place to live because of their tireless commitment to—and involvement in—our community.
Then again, that is Fort Frances residents in a nutshell—as the long list of previous “Citizens of the Year,” from the late Dede Mallory through to John McTaggart last year, certainly attests. Just look at any local event (like the annual Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championship) or project (the Townshend Theatre and “Ice for Kids” Arena spring to mind, as do hosting the WHO conference here in May or the current push to “re-invent” the town) over the years.
They succeed because of one reason: the volunteers behind them.
Frankly, a town is only as great as its people. And in that regard, Fort Frances is truly great—and blessed.
Congratulations, Lin and Jean, for this well-deserved honour. But, really, it is the rest of us who are honoured to have you as friends and neighbours. We thank you.
