No one can say there wasn’t anything to do in Fort Frances on Canada Day.
Thanks to the local Canada Day Celebrations Committee, there was a parade to watch, lots of activities to enjoy out at Pither’s Point, and, of course, a booming fireworks display to close out the festivities.
It was an impressive feat, especially considering the future of any sort of Canada Day celebration here very much was in limbo just a few short months ago given the growing lack of volunteers—all the more aggravated by the departure of long-time organizer Paul Bock.
Fortunately, a dedicated group came together to ensure July 1 would not just be another day. And it was great to see their efforts rewarded by people turning out to take in the various events. After all, nothing is more disheartening, from an organizer’s point of view, than putting a lot of time and effort into planning something only to have no one show up.
Instead, the day’s success so thrilled the committee that it’s already looking ahead to next year with a renewed sense of vigour—a very good sign, indeed.
Sure, there are always things to improve on. And clearly fundraising is key—as is attracting even more people to help out. But an excellent start has been made and there’s every reason to believe Canada Day once again can be a major summer event in Fort Frances.
Congratulations, and thank you, to the committee for a job well done.
