Get out and enjoy

With the fantastic summer weather we’ve finally been enjoying of late, let’s hope Mother Nature continues to smile on us over the next week because there’s certainly lots of activities planned for residents and visitors to enjoy.
It all gets underway Friday with the BIA’s annual “Mall Days” on Scott Street, with the bulk of festivities, including the mini-queen and king contests, taking place at the museum courtyard. Also planned that day is the always-popular “fish ’n chips” sale at St. John’s Anglican Church.
To cap it all off, the annual “Relay for Life” runs from 7 p.m. on Friday until 7 a.m. on Saturday out at Pither’s Point, where “teams” will be walking the track all night long to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. There are poignant moments, including the “Survivors’ Victory Lap” to start things off and then the lighting of luminaries at dusk, but a good time also is had by all in the name of a great cause.
Activities on Tuesday (June 30) will begin with the “Teddy Bear Picnic” at 11 a.m. at the Legion Park.
In a change this year, a revamped “Quest for the Best Talent” now is being held in conjunction with Fun in the Sun/Canada Day. It will take to the stage on Tuesday evening at the Memorial Sports Centre following a FITS dinner that starts at 4 p.m.
Everything culminates on Canada Day, of course, when a full slate of activities is planned for the entire family to take part.
The Legion ladies will be serving up a pancake breakfast from 7-10 a.m., from where people can head over to Scott Street to watch the annual parade starting at 11 a.m. Then it’s out to Pither’s Point Park where there will be bathtub races, a kids’ 1K run, volleyball and horseshoe tournaments, a sandcastle-building contest, 50/50 Bingo, and a food court.
A new event this year is a showcase of local bands running from 4-9:30 p.m. Attention then will focus on the fireworks display at dusk, but the partying doesn’t end there. A Fun in the Sun social is set from about 10:30 p.m.-2 a.m. at La Place Rendez-Vous to help ring in Canada’s 142nd birthday.
How you choose to celebrate Canada Day is your business, but thanks to the hard work of the various organizing committees, there’s plenty of options for people to enjoy.
Certainly nobody can say there’s never anything to do in Fort Frances.
