Mr. Jim Bosma is back home here after a short stay at La Verendrye. Their daughter, Margaret of Thunder Bay, stayed with her mother while Jim was hospitalized. We wish you better health, Jim.
Barbara Viehbeck of Thunder Bay, son, Davis, and daughter, Sarah, visited here recently. They motored to Bemidji and on return, Davis and his mother flew to Kelowna to visit with relatives from Thunder Bay. Daughter, Sarah in the meantime is down east looking after school activities. This is her final year.
Monday, Aug. 20, 23 had a birthday party for Mark Van Heyst at the Emo Inn. Asking his age, Mark said, “old enough to know better.” He was presented a marble decorated cake and a card wishing Mark many more years of happy life and birthdays to look forward to. In attendance were the regular Emo Inn Coffee Boys, Paul and wife, Margaret Melanson, Len Jordens, Roger Bonot, Art Bonot, Neil Grant, Milt Guba. A trio of Val Kellar, Armin Mosbeck and Diana Redford sang the birthday song, which thrilled Mark. Our 2001 First Princess and congeniality winner of the Emo Fair Diane Redford cut the cake which made Mark’s day.
Cribbage winners at the Emo Legion Wednesday, Aug. 22 were: High–Darlyne Bruce and Jerry Allen; Consolations–Darcy and Lize Jack. Door prize winner was Gladys Allen. The Legion reminds card players that on Sept. 8, the regular monthly cribbage and 500 will be back on schedule.
After a visit to the Emo Public Library this past week, I found Kristen Friesen, a grade 10 student at SCAP, had chosen to volunteer there working towards her 40 hours of community service. She is focusing on a nursing career. She relished being able to meet the public at EPL, it was certainly educational.
We express our deepest sympathy to the families of Desmond DeBungie. His funeral was held Friday morning from Manitou Rapids Gymnasium with interment in the cemetery next to Highway 71/11 West. I happened on two occasions to be hospitalized the same time with Desmond at LaVerendrye. A likeable individual, he had numerous visitors. Through his illness, Desmond always managed to spring back and be back with relatives at home. He’ll be sadly missed by all who knew him for his friendly disposition. He left for a place free from pain and sorrow. Rev. Francis Flook conducted the service. Thursday evening a wake was held at the gymnasium.
Sincere condolences to the family of Muriel Durocher. Her funeral was held from Barwick Community Church, and Pastor Ken Johnson officiated. It was always pleasant to communicate with Muriel and several times I had the opportunity to have lengthy talks with her of past experiences and how everything was moving along in the present times of life. After she had entered Rainycrest Home, I did not meet with Muriel that often. She was an interesting and loving person, great to have known Muriel. After these well known elderly pass on their memories will continue to linger with us from time to time depending on the occasion that arises.
David Wilson, son of Lydia Wilson and Heidi Vos, second eldest daughter of Karel and Donna Vos, were married Saturday, Aug. 25, at a double ring wedding ceremony at the Emo Christian Reformed Church. Pastor Gerald VanSmeerdyk officiated.
Pianist Renée Martin played the processional and recessional, and led the congregation in two hymns, Praise to the Lord Almighty, and God The Father of your People. Soloist was Alyson Booth in two selections, The Father Says I Do, and during the register signing with I Will Be Here. Institution and Meaning of Marriage were given by Pastor Gerald, along with a message based on Ruth: Chapter 1 verses 16-17. A presentation of a Bible was made to the couple by Nick Schryvershof on behalf of the church congregation.
The wedding party included: usherette Nora Vandenbrand; usher Murray Wilson; maid of honour Corrine James; bridesmaids Jonna Hasiuk, Krista Vos, Kari Lemelin; best man Keith Cates; groomsmen Jesse Hasiuk, Dwayne Pelepetz, and Darren Blattner; flower girl Jillian Armstrong; and ring bearer Daniel Vandenbrand.
Adelia and I had the privilege on our recent visit to Bowman to attend the baptism of our 17th grandchild, Ashley Christine, daughter of Wayne and Leanne Guba (nee Carpenter) of Bowman on Sunday, Aug. 19, at St. Charles Catholic Church. Fr. Jeffrey Zwack officiated after the regular morning mass.
Prior to the morning worship service at Emo Christian Reformed Church, Archie Wiersema made a untimely announcement to the congregation. Our minister of five years, Pastor Gerald VanSmeerdyk, has accepted a call as pastor to the CRC at Dunville, Ont., and would be leaving around the end of Sept. 2001. I had heard rumours of this quite a few weeks ago but had waited until it was definitely announced. “It is with mixed feelings the family is leaving here,” noted Pastor Gerald. “There is a shortage of minister,” noted Wiersema. It may take two months or two years to have the pulpit filled, until then there will be ministers from other CRC churches as guests.
Sunday after the morning worship service we had another wedding anniversary and a tasty cake for our coffee break in the fellowship hall. Elmer and Helen Cates were celebrating their 30 years together, which is this Tuesday, Aug. 28. Congratulations and many more of the same.
Another cake was served at the other end of the CRC Fellowship Hall. It was a farewell gesture for the Henry Krikke family who have been for the last 18 years part of the church family here. This was to show congregations appreciation for all their generous participation they had enriched everyone’s lives at CRC.
Henry and family will be moving to Cambridge, Ont., area. Archie Wiersema presented a farewell gift to Henry Krikke, on behalf of the congregation.
