An appreciation dinner was held at the Emo Legion last Thursday in honour of Rupert Hunter, who retired from the Emo volunteer ambulance service after some 25,000 hours.
The gathering attracted about 50 people, with Ed Carlson handling the program as emcee. Presentations were made by Janet Judson, Mike Williams, Gary Judson (Township of Emo), Grace Silander (Riverside Health Care Facilities Inc.), and Diane and Jim Maxey.
“I was a touching, moving, and emotional evening for me,” Rupert said when I spoke to him Saturday morning. “It was hard to keep tears back.”
Rupert and I worked together for five years coaching and managing the Manitou-Emo Little League baseball team in the Lake of the Woods league, which also included Pinewood, Rainy River, Baudette, Williams, Warroad, and Roseau.
Unfortunately, after Rupert and I could not find anyone interested in taking over from us and the team died. The league still operates with four teams involved.
Mary Luckie will celebrate her 80th birthday tomorrow (May 23). On Sunday (May 26) from 2-4 p.m., a birthday party will be held at the Golden Age Manor common room in her honour.
Everyone is invited to attend and wish Mary many more years of good health.
Cribbage winners at the Emo Legion last Wednesday (May 15) were Darlyne Bruce and Jerry Allen (high), with consolations to Dennis and Renne Kivell.
Darlyne Bruce also won the door prize, while Jane Allen and Kay Bragg both had 23 hands.
Don’t forget the monthly Bingo goes tomorrow (May 23) at the Emo Legion. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Kim-Jo Bliss was the winner of alocket pendant draw made May 10 at the tea for residents at Emo hospital. Proceeds will go towards the activity program for residents.
Syd Wall of Vermilion Bay was a Mother’s Day visitor here, treating his mother to a dinner for two at the Barwick Family Restaurant. Syd was with the OPP detachment here before being transferred and later retiring from the force.
There’s a look at Circle D Family Restaurant here in Emo. This past week, a new sign was erected and repairs made to the front patio—all in preparation for the inaugural Emo Walleye Classic which runs May 31-June 1.
Former Emo residents Alex and Tina Krikke, now living in eastern Ontario, were visiting with their son and family, Mike and Sandra Krikke in Fort Frances, and with other relatives and friends here.
The couple also had the privilege to witness the baptism of their 15th grandchild, Wyatt Alexander, during the morning worship service at the Christian Reformed Church, officiated by visiting guest speaker Rev. John Boonstra from Thunder Bay.
Rev. Boonstra led in both services and was accompanied by wife, Carolyn. They were guests of Ann and Nick Veldhuisen.
“We have attended the baptism of all our grandchildren,” noted Alex Krikke.

In our regular phone conversations with our children every weekend, I was told our grandson, David Guba, served as altar boy this past Sunday at St. Charles Catholic Church in Bowman.
David is the son of Wayne and Leanne Guba (nee Carpenter).
