Couple wished a happy retirement
I extend happy retirement to Nancy and Norman Cain of Devlin, who had their party last weekend which I missed. Nancy retired from Crossroads School while Norman called it a day at the Emo Arena.
We are going to miss Norm at the arena for his humorous remarks and the gentle way he handled the public, especially those little rascals who always tried to get away with the smallest infraction.
No big deal, Norm would remark.
Peter Martin and wife, Merna, from eastern Ontario are relaxing these days at their summer cottage at Clearwater Lake. Speaking with Peter, he was heading out for a round of golf at Kitchen Creek with Dennis Kivell.
Lois and Chuck Moss of Pontiac, Mich. also are here visiting and renewing acquaintances. They’ll be spending much time at their summer cottage.
My wife, Adelia, had a phone call from Marg Douglas of Thunder Bay to say she and David Hartnell have arrived back from their vacation in Arizona.
The couple will be visiting with Marg’s children and grandchildren in Thunder Bay, but expect to be here around the Emo fall fair. After their visit in the Baudette-Williams area, they’ll be heading to Seattle to spend some time with David’s family.
During recent Canada Day festivities at the Emo Arena, I wrongly identified the little girl buzzing around the surface in her little vehicle as Kayla Stang.
It should have read Riley Redford, daughter of Mike and Marni Redford. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Cribbage winners at the Emo Legion last Wednesday (July 17) were Jerry Allan and Darlyne Bruce (high), with consolations to Rudy Meyers and Gladys Allen.
Gladys also won the door prize.
Holding a 23 hand was Joan Buttazoni and Bill Birrell.
Buzz and Louise McComb shortly will be taking up residence at the Golden Age Manor. Good luck to the couple, who no doubt soon will get acquainted with the residents and be actively participating in programs.
The manor is an excellent spot for retirement—everyone knows everyone and each one takes care of the other.
The McCombs had sold their home and property to the Mark Loney family.
Speaking of the Loneys, there has been some activity at the Fairway Store property. Surveying was being done on the north end next to the store to build a new one.
A committee has been struck to prepare for the 50th anniversary of the Christian Reformed Church in Emo.
Members include Nick and Hilda Schryvershof (he is chairman), Nick and Ann Veldhuisen (she is vice-chairman), Corrie and Janice Wiersema (she is secretary), Heidi Gustafson, Mark VanHeyst, Ted and Ynske Kaemingh, Ria Hettinga, Arie and Audrey Borger, John and Linda Esselink, Sietske VanZwol, Diane Veldhuisen, Audrey Borger, and myself.
March 25, 2003 is the actual date of the anniversary, but plans are in the works for a homecoming celebration slated for July 12-13.
Former resident Helen Hands, her husband, and family from Toronto presently are house guests at Elmer and Helen Cates. They attended morning worship service at the C.R.C. and were welcomed to their coffee fellowship.
The family is visiting with her parents, Garnet and Violet Hands, who reside at Rainycrest in Fort Frances, and with other relatives and friends.
Coming shortly will be Helen’s sister, Louise, her husband, and family from Dickenson, N.D. They also will be house guests of the Cates.
With the annual fall fair coming up soon in Emo, two groups already are preparing their booths. The “Pro-life” booth will be selling homemade pies Aug. 16-17 to raise funds for the organization.

Meanwhile, the St. Patrick’s Bingo booth also will be located on the fairgrounds Aug. 16-17. That contact person is Denise Donaldson (486-3486).
Roos and Francise Anderson will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 3 with a come-and-go tea from 2-4 p.m. at the Stratton Community Centre and then and dancing/visiting from 8 p.m. until midnight.
No gifts please, just the pleasure of your company.
This past Sunday, the C.R.C. congregation welcomed Rev. Henry VanderBeek to the pulpit from Smithville, who led both worship services.
