Bonnie Wilson, manager of the CIBC in Emo, tells me of the following staff changes. Added on a permanent basis is Sherry Jewell, who replaces Karen Davis as account manager.
Karen, after 14 years of faithful service at the CIBC, resigned and now has a position at the Nor-West Animal Clinic in Fort Frances.
Meanwhile, a temporary change includes Brenda Elias as personal banker while Emma Govier is on maternity leave.
The Wheels to Meals committee advises their program will start up again this Thursday (Sept. 13) at the Emo Legion. Carpet bowling starts at 10:45 a.m., followed by lunch at noon.
Cards can be played following lunch for those who wish.
The group will discuss new entertainment, speakers, upcoming tournaments, etc. for the 2001-02 season, noted Molly Crozier.
Emo Arena manager Tony Bliss, and staff Norman Cain and Linda Carmody, recently were looking over the facility for any necessary repairs and upgrading.
The ice will be in Oct. 9 ready for minor hockey, ringette, figure skating, and men’s liniment league action.
The Emo Figure Skating Club showed a slight improvement over last year with 43 skaters signed up. I have not received any report from minor hockey or ringette on their registration numbers this season.
I’ve noticed the fees have jumped considerably, not only in the field of local sports but also user fees for 2001 have been added at the ETL, something new.
The congregation at the Christian Reformed Church in Emo bid farewell to the VanSmeerdyk family. The fellowship committee served cake in the fellowship hall in their honour after the morning worship service.
We thank God for the time that Pastor Gerald VanSmeerdyk was here ministering to the congregation. We’ll all miss you, and wish you God’s blessings as you move to Bethel Christian Reformed Church at Dunnville.
Pastor Gerald’s final sermon topic was on God at work, seeking God’s love while the ability of faith and hope fades away. Chris Hellinga led the congregation in several well-known hymns.
At the evening service, Pastor Gerald spoke on “Fill Me Up,” the gathering song selected was “Christian Hearts in Love United” led by pianist Marie-Ann DeGroot.
The service concluded with “God Be With You til We Meet Again.”
Are you in need of encouragement for your task in the church? Find out Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Christian Reformed Church in Emo, where the topic of the session will be The Day of Encouragement.
This is for all workers in the church: deacons, pastors, elders, youth leaders, Sunday School teachers, club leaders, etc. Set aside this one day to meet together with many other workers from Brandon, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, and here.
Registration forms are available, with the deadline to sign up being Sept. 14.
The Emo food cupboard needs volunteers. There are only two left and so it only can be opened two Wednesday afternoons a month. Even offering to be there just one afternoon a month would be great help.

Cribbage winners at the Emo Legion last Wednesday (Sept. 5) were Bill Burrell and Lyle Gill (high), with consolations to Donna Morrish and Adelia Guba.
Mona Woolsey won the door prize.
At the monthly cribbage and 500 games there last Saturday, Ron McQuaker and Merv Hyatt topped the cribbage players, with consolations to Connie Hill and Nicole Drennan.
In 500 play, the winners were Elder Jack and Mary Gavin (high), and Evelyn Brown and Kathy Frazier (low). The door prize was won by Bob Woolsey.

Elsie Skinner had as a guest recently her daughter, Sharon, and husband from Edmonton. They, along with the Ed Kuitunen family, attended the wedding of Sharon’s son, Greg, in Atikokan.
Sharon was employed with CIBC here at one time, and still is with that bank in Edmonton.
The coffee boys at the Emo Inn celebrated another birthday, with Art Bonot being the honouree this time around. He was presented with a one-layer lemon cake and we all had a feast.
Diana Redford and Diane Nordstrom came through with the Happy Birthday song. Also attending was Mark Van Heyst, Paul Melanson, Len Jordens, Elroy Douglas from Fort Frances, Neil Grant, and myself.

Lindsay McIIvaine will wed John Szeder of here Oct. 20 at the Pioneer Congregational Church in Sacramento, Calif., with a reception to follow on the Delta King.
The bride is the daughter of Richard and Donna McIIvaine of Davis. She is a graduate of Davis High School (1996) and is now a travel agent with Davis Time for Travel.
The groom is the son of Frank and Inge Szeder of here. He graduated from FFHS in 1991, and later received a BA in mathematics and computer science in 1996 from the University of Waterloo.
He now is a software developer for Airlink Communications in Fremont, Calif. (near San Francisco).
His brothers are Frank and Stefan Szeder, and his sister and brother-in-law are Monika and Dan Galloway of here.
