Spring Ag Day just around the corner

What a day to kick of the March Break! The sun is shining, and they are predicting quite a warm day for us. I have a big list of jobs that will be better with sunshine; fencing, cleaning my poor dusty truck and some work in the yard. With little snow the calves are already trying to explore beyond the fence boundaries, so I must take some time to ensure the electric fence has 0 shorts and is giving off the best possible power. It is a bit tricky with the ground being frozen yet. I am waiting on my last 12 calves, and I think it is going to be a slow process. I have a feeling that the poor quality of hay I was feeding last year plays in a role in this. Thankfully the hay is better quality this year and I have been feeding protein blocks since last November hoping to keep everyone in tip top shape.

This Friday you will want to head out to the Emo Hospital for the Auxiliary’s Shamrock Tea. It will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Come for a visit, and chance to pick up some home baking!

Just a quick reminder that the Spring Ag Day is quickly approaching. April 6th at the Chapple Community Centre and if you are interested in participating in the trade show you will need to confirm your attendance soon. You can reach out to either Bernie or Rebecca Zimmerman. The agenda is still in a draft from but as soon as it is available we will be sharing. They have moved the event up by a month hoping that everyone will have time to come out and support the efforts of the Rainy River Federation of Agriculture for hosting this event.

I think many of us became deeply involved with the Brier last week as we were cheering for Team Northern Ontario who are skipped by Stratton’s Trevor Bonot. Wow – did that team make us all proud! I was so nervous trying to watch that I had to leave the room. Trevor told me it was easier to play than to watch. He ended up 4th in his pool and there is no doubt in my mind that he will be back to the Brier again. I absolutely loved hearing the TSN officials speak so highly of Trevor and his team. He is now resting (battling the flu) and getting ready to leave with his sister to the East Coast. We wish them all the best and you can beat we will all be cheering for the team once again.

This is my last week at home full-time. I plan to make the most of it and hope I get a little more sleep, so I have the energy to tackle some of big spring jobs I have planned. The time change always messes me up – not matter what time of the year it is but it certainly isn’t great at calving time when you are already lacking. As we all keep saying – “let’s just keep in one way!”

Happy March Break everyone, get out and enjoy the sunshine!
