Thankfully we have received a worthwhile amount of rain and even though I am complaining about being cold, the temperature will help to allow the rain to soak in. This will help with pastures, hay and for those that have been watering their lawn. I am still feeling nervous about hay and pasture as there really isn’t much growth. I have no problem finding something to keep me awake at night. I always seem to have some sort of worry.
I had a jam-packed weekend of socializing and working. Friday night we celebrated my sister-in-law’s dad birthday. Chores were done late but everyone survived. The good thing about doing chores late in the summer is the long daylight. Saturday my mom and I headed to Littlefork, Minn., to visit our friends, Wayne and Sharon Meyers. Wayne and Sharon were hosting a garage sale, and we wanted to check it out. They had saved a couple of old pieces for me, so they were happy I made it over. Wayne toured us around on his gator and we enjoyed his beautiful property and his grandson’s awesome deer stand. Wayne and Sharon have moved into an apartment in International Falls but still get to spend time at their farm. He still has goats, chickens and guinea fowl. They are wonderful people, and we enjoyed our visit.
I had my mom in Thunder Bay last week to see her Dr. She had a good check-up, and I cleared it with him that she is good to chase cattle again. : ) Once home from our visit we got the biggest breeding group of cattle in and gave all the calves a dewormer shot and sent them off to pasture. We had a happy bunch of cattle, but the other two groups were less than happy. I planted flowers and more gardens before giving the butcher group their dewormer shot.
Sunday morning was damp but there were no complaints. After chores I ended up working in the office because I had to stay clean as we were heading to celebrate at a bridal shower for Katie Hay! After getting home we finished the pumpkin patch. The rain started again so I just started cutting brush. After getting rain multiple times, I was cold and wet I headed back to the office.
I might have mentioned that we were going to let our ducks sit on some eggs, but the raven took them. Sunday morning, I was bringing my two eggs to the house but had to fill my bird feeders, so I set them on the step. The raven came along and took one while I was doing that. Now I am getting fed up with him. We moved the duck house in hopes they might nest inside but they feared it! We will see if they get brave and start using it. I am not saying the raven won’t go in there, but I thought it was worth a try.
Things are progressing slowly at the Research Station but with this rain and hopefully so more heat later this week we should see things take off. I am sure it will really push the weeds along as well, but we will deal with that! We are still working on the back area with the cultivator trying to get it all leveled and preparing to re-plant laneways. We have a bunch of plant counts to do and once that is finished it will be time to start our forages.
