My first ‘baby’ of 2017 has arrived

As I was changing my cows to leave for the 4-H leaders’ annual meeting Friday night, I glanced up at the barn camera and noticed I had a heifer calving.
My mom had arrived to pick me up but I told her to go on without me as I fully expected it to take most of the evening with this being her first one and all.
But it was only about half-an-hour later that my first baby of 2017 arrived: a cute little heifer and her momma loved her instantly. It was great!
So I’m officially started and waiting for the next one to arrive.
I feel somewhat like a zombie because I haven’t quite adjusted to getting up every few hours yet. “Roxee” doesn’t get up and sleeps in because I make her tired getting up all night.
The extra dog that I’m sitting loves the routine but she was heading back home Monday.

The executive for the 4-H Leaders’ Association for 2017 is Chantelle Teeple (chair), Tammi Le-Blanc (vice), Mary-Ann Haw (secretary), and Kim Desserre (treasurer).
Thanks to these ladies for offering to take on these positions.

Last summer, it was pointed out by a few producers that with our growing number of grain acres in Rainy River District, grain marketing will need to be carried out.
With the NOHFC’s tile drainage and land clearing projects that are continuing on, it looks as though those grain acres are continuing to grow, as well.
We had a contact with Richardson International from Thunder Bay (one of the options to market grain from our district) and asked if they would host a workshop for us to explain how to market grain, options, terms, and perhaps just learning the language.
The workshop is booked for Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Lunch will be provided so it would be appreciated if you could let me know if you are planning to attend. You can call or text me at 275-9706 or drop me a line at kimjobliss@gmail.com
We are excited to provide this information to our producers.

If you have any animals that you are sitting on right now that could be sold through the abattoir, please get in touch with Dale.
This being a slower time is making things quite difficult for us right now.

Feb. 16 is “Celebrate Canada’s Agriculture Day!” Although we likely won’t have any special events taking place here in Rainy River District, I encourage you to take the time that day to think about how much agriculture affects your life!
It is not only the food we eat or milk we drink, it can be the leather on your seats, the bubble gum you are chewing, the asphalt you are driving on, and many other things.
You may be distanced from the farm but every day you are using a product we are producing.
Challenge yourself to make a meal from local food and celebrate with us on Feb. 16!

I am hoping many of you are aware of the Cloverbelt Local Food Co-op. If not, please familiarize yourself with it by Googling it!
It is a neat on-line order system that allows you to order products and then pick them up on a certain specified date. I think the system is a great alternative for our district, as well.
We are working on making it happen and I hope you will take the time to check into it by visiting http://cloverbeltlocalfoodcoop.com (and if you have questions, please let me know).
We need to have the interest to make it work!
