I can’t believe we are nearly at mid-January! I always remember Nanny telling me “January is a long, cold month.” We haven’t had it to bad for weather but it does look like the more normal January temperatures are returning this week. I am not completely over Christmas. I did get my tree down on Sunday but I still have some other decorations to store and I will get my lights put away outside again. (Seems like I just finished getting them up to be honest.) The house seems dark with out the tree and that is exactly how my yard feels once I take them down. I have been doing some housework as I go but then that leaves me wanting to change things up and re-fresh things. I had been ordered so much that the bank blocked my card to make sure it was me. It wasn’t really as bad as it sounds but I was happy the bank was looking out for me. This warmer weather makes every cattle producer at bit nervous because the cattle tend to get relaxing a little too much and easily end up getting over to far and they can’t get up. It doesn’t take much and it happens rather quickly and they don’t make it. Every morning when Lexi and I walk up to the cows we are anxious to see them all happy and alive. Mine are getting fairly heavy in calf so that only adds to the issue. I will be bringing the girls up this Sunday to give a booster show to all the first calving heifers. I plan to keep them back in the bush until the first week of February. My due date for calving is February 20. This week I have some running to do. I will be attending the Thunder Bay Beef Producers AGM Wednesday, back to our local meeting Thursday and then off to Dryden for the Kenora District Cattlemen’s AGM. It is always nice to see the producers but it is also nice to have that travel behind me. I will have to get everyone fed up so they are content while I am on the road. Lexi and I have been working on getting our ski trail ready. The first pass was a tough one. We found ourselves an app we can use to measure our distance, speed and it maps our routes. I was excited to try out the trail and the app. Firstly, I had to take a few calls while skiing which wasn’t the easiest and then I got to a bit of a drop in the trail and for the first time I fell, and I fell hard. I had watched a video on how to get up but I had to call Lexi back to balance me to get up. We were off again only to find that the cows decided they would take a leisurely stroll on the ski trail and it wasn’t just one cow, it appeared to be the herd and that was a bumpy mess for a good stretch. Once I got through that it was good going. I wasn’t as fast as our captain of the ski club but it was a good workout because I was sweating by the time I reached home again. Our fancy app said it was 4 km. The trail has been re-routed to avoid the herd of cows and the dip that flattened me out but now it us up to 4.6km. This ski club is serious busy!
Please join us at the RRCA AGM this Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Way School in Stratton. I don’t like to be negative but we were disappointed with the lack of people attending our meeting last year and we hope we can improve that! The Sales Barn is a valuable part of our infrastructure and we take pride in selling your cattle so please attend! We are happy with any feedback and would love to hear where you would like to direction on other things / events we could be working on!
