The middle of July has arrived. Time is just ticking along.
The weather is mostly fabulous! We are down to our last 120 acres of hay but it will be a slow week since I will be out of town for a few days. I am somewhat looking forward to this meeting. I will be in Barrie, ON so I am getting a visit in with one of my good friends, Destiny. Destiny’s BFF is travelling with me for the visit so it should be a nice few days.
On Friday, I was off work early and started on the tractor by 11 a.m. and baled until 10 p.m. It was a long day but Saturday was the Annual Bliss Fishing Day and I decided it was a good idea to go.
We had a slow start leaving on Saturday morning. My mom and dad left on Friday but my dad couldn’t find his phone. My boyfriend/partner and I looked a bit and then I remembered that we had installed the “Find My Phone” app after he lost it the last time. Of course, I couldn’t remember the correct password.
We decided to head to Mine Centre. So, after I found a way to reset it (I was nearly carsick because of being on my phone so long), I asked my vet cousin to take her kids and see if she could locate it.
They did; it was just like the Pokémon game! She said the kids were disappointed it didn’t take longer to find.
Two take home points: 1. Be sure to install “Find My Phone” and 2. Give someone else your password. Storing it on your lost phone is not much help.
Fishing was pretty good, lots a small fish. Though I wasn’t catching the desired species, I caught the most fish in our boat! We all paid an entry fee of $10 and the biggest walleye would take home the pot, that wasn’t our boat but we had a great fish-fry and visit.

There has been reports of cereal army worms showing up in barley and wheat in the district.
Be sure to inspect your fields, ideally in the early morning as that’s when you will find them.
Some of the counts are high enough to spray for the pests.

Next week is our annual open house on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at 7 p.m. We welcome everyone!
The Annual Soil & Crop Tour will start here at EARS on July 25 at 9:30 a.m. Great news-we have a bus! If you meet here at 9:30 a.m. you can jump on and enjoy the view! We will leave here by 9:45 a.m. and head straight to John and Jacob Gerber’s farm.
We will be looking at come conventional corn and potatoes. Once we leave there we will view some crops along route and stop in at Annie and Jon van Rozen’s greenhouse where we will see a new greenhouse and CFFO is sponsoring our lunch!
I would appreciate if you could RSVP with me so we have a good count for the lunch. Send me an email at kbliss@uoguelph.ca or text at 807-275-9706.
Once we are finished our lunch, we will board the bus and head to Larry Lamb’s. From Larry’s we are off to see Peter Gerber’s to see his soybeans and wheat! The final stop will be at the Community Pasture.
Christine O’Reilly, the forage specialist with OMAFRA, will be joining us and promised to have some engaging activities.
Please bring along something to drink and a lawn chair for lunch if you can! It is going to be a great day!
