We are now a week out from our big crop day in the district. Our final planning meeting is on Tuesday morning. Last week, many of our out-of-town guests were calling and texting with concern about travelling in our region with all the fires, road closures and lack of lodging.
We asked them to try not to worry and give it some time, as we did have some rain in the forecast. Something similar happened the last time we hosted the compaction event. We had been really wet, and there was little hay made, and the speakers were disappointed with the registration numbers. We went ahead, and it turned out very well.
I am hoping we have good numbers, as it is very discouraging when people don’t show up! (But then complain because “nothing ever happens here.”) The specialists who are coming next week are highly respected, and I am certain everyone will learn something. As a reminder, there is something for all producers no matter what your commodity is.
The schedule is:
Crop Diagnostic at OCRC – Emo from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m.
We will have lunch at the Station and then head West North of the Highway and show off all the great crops on the way to Rainy River.
We will stop at Jesse Tait’s drainage field and talk about that project. From there, we will head to Pinewood Crop Services, and Timo will let us know the updates that are happening and likely look at some nearby crops.
We will then travel to the Food Grains Project just west of Emo and continue to Cornell’s Farms to look at grazing corn, e-collars and end the day with a BBQ.

Saturday morning was our Emo/Devlin 4H Funday. It was a great morning, and once again the Chartiers and Cauls were gracious enough to host us! I was very impressed with how hard the members worked, as the animals behaved very well. Thankfully, Aaron Bujold joined us for a bit, giving our members some great grooming and showing tips. We have less than one month until the big day, and I am so proud that the kids are well on their way to a great show.
I had a bit of a sad week. Black Bettie, my house bunny, passed away. I knew that she was slowly fading, but that morning I could tell that morning that she wasn’t doing well. I checked her over to make sure that there wasn’t anything obvious, but sadly I think her age caught up to her.
It may sound funny to some, but I really miss her. I talked a lot to Bettie, and she was always very happy to see me come home every day. Lexi was so sad when I was packing up her things. The worst part of our animals is that they don’t live long enough.
