One of my friends gives me a hard time about always have a dirty truck. The truth is, I don’t like it much either, but I live on a gravel road. A sprinkle of rain makes a dirty truck. I have most likely told you this before but if I wash my truck, I can guarantee to make it rain so I never wash it during haying season and other important times of farm life. I decided I would give my cattle trailer a good cleaning and because it was hooked to the truck, I decided I would treat the truck as well. It was only a few hours later that we got some rain. It got me thinking…why didn’t I wash my truck sooner? Our pasture and hay fields could really use it.
The cooler temperatures or FROST didn’t help with growing much this week either. I covered my plants and still lost some. I am not happy about that. Last week when I cut my grass, we had to sweep it up because it was so long, this week it wasn’t the case. That also means we didn’t have much pasture growth as well, so my cows are still eating dry old hay. They are not happy about this and me hooking up and moving the cattle trailer nearly started a stampede. They will go this week, but I am holding off for a few days.
We started stringing our hops yard last week. The worst part was it was after the frost and the plants were soft, so we ended up not putting the vines on the string. Hopefully this week we can work on that. We will plan to get the dry beans in the ground as well. Last week was either too cold or too windy so it wasn’t good for spraying or planting.
Rainy River Meats is looking for a full-time butcher. If you are interested or know of someone who might be interested, please reach out. The business has really taken off and we really don’t want to lose the momentum.
My oldest niece turned 15 over the weekend. I can hardly believe it. Time sure does fly by. Maddie is very artsy, and she has been selling blank note cards. She had two different design sets and she has not completed her wildlife series. They are nice, and we should have some printed this week! She has cards at both Lowey’s Greenhouse and Emo Feed.
Marlee is off to Spry Farm with Berkley the Choc Lab puppy for obedience this week! How exciting! Berkley is a smart little thing, but some discipline will be great for her.
Lots of great hockey on these days…Sure, makes me miss my dad. He would be enjoying this so much. It is great to see some fans back in the stands. Keep on getting vaccinated friends – we all need to get back to normal!
We had our first Google Meet 4-H Meeting. We have five members in our Devlin Beef Club this year and we are going to focus a bit more on breeding and the female side of things. We wouldn’t end up with our great steers if we didn’t have some great mommas!
