We pretty much have whipped through the first month of 2018 and it sounds like we have some colder temperatures in store for us again.
I have my cows all moved into the calving area now and my barn is close to being ready. I just have to get the straw in pens now and I likely will start bringing in a few of my first-calf heifers only to get them to adjust to the new routine.
Because most of them haven’t been in the barn since they were born, I think it is a lot easier on them to have been in the barn a few times before they become a new mom since that alone can be scary for some.
It also is the first time for our new windbreaks and though I’m not wishing for any wind, I do think they are going to find the yard much more comfortable.

I had a very successful week last week crossing off many things on my “to do” list. I’m even close to finishing up the SOP binder for the Stratton sales barn.
I’ve decided that once I have it put together, from this point on it is going to be someone else’s project. I have been working on it for a few years and though most of the work was finished, it needed to be double-checked and put nicely in a binder.
A few more hours and it will be just that.
I have a few things I want to do in my house, as well, before the calves start to come. Once you get into that, and you are functioning on little sleep, these bigger projects are just not that enjoyable.

Since Friday was a P.D. Day, we were lucky to have Maddie and Marlee, Charlie from Dryden and, for a few hours, my vet cousin’s kids. We had plans to do some crafts but because the weather was so great, we spent most of the time outside.
We have a piece of rubber belting that we pull behind the snowmachine and the kids just love it! The only thing you need is lots of gas for your snowmachine.
