Something hit me as I was catching up on my calving book today – I still haven’t written my Christmas letter! I never get to it until at least mid-January, but this is bad. Calves are just starting to come, and you can bet this will be a busy week because I am supposed to be in virtual meetings for a good part of the week. I had to get help already with one. It was an older cow, but something just didn’t seem right. I gave her lots of time, but she never really did much pushing more of a strain. I called my neighbour/cousin/Vet. She gave her an exam and said there wasn’t a lot of room, so we decided to give some help. The calf was big enough, but we really don’t know why she wasn’t trying harder. After the calf was out, she still seems to be uncomfortable and kind of squatting. Suddenly, a large water bag appeared. Once that came, she was fine and back to normal. My theory is that the water bag coming later than the calf, she just didn’t dilate properly, with the order that things occurred.
Last Friday I was invited to celebrate my friend June’s 93 Birthday! It worked out perfect as Lexi had a Vet appt and my mom was home to keep an eye on cows. Some of June’s friends made fancy sandwiches and a delicious birthday cake! We all celebrated with a sip of champagne and June is looking forward to doing it all again next year! I was so fortunate to meet June when I joined Riverside Foundation. She is one of the most special ladies I have ever met – Happy 93rd Birthday June, you are one of a kind!
February 22, 2022 was Canada’s Agriculture Day! It is the day you should raise a fork to food you love and the people who produce it! Challenge yourself to cooking a all local or at least all Canadian meal! Join in the celebration on all Social Media sites! That is one of my busy days this week so there is a good chance I will be celebrating with toast.
Ok, so I think most of you will all agree – enough with the snow and cold. We get told that there is going to be just a couple colder days, well there looks to be a few more showing up this week. And SNOW! It is difficult to see over most of the banks in my yard now – things are closing in and it almost makes you feel claustrophobic. I am tired of shovelling and fighting to keep gates open. What worried me is the fact that March can often be a stormy month. Mother Nature must be trying to make up for the rain she forgot to send us last summer.
The Rainy River Cattlemen held their first board meeting last week. Murray McDonald is our new President and Jeff Pollard is our Vice-Chair. Louis Bujold our past – chair is going to continue in an active role to see the barn project to completion which will be the end of March. As the weather cooperates people will be working at the barn to complete the task list! The Spring Cattle Sale is quickly approaching and we have some areas that need to be finished before that rolls around.
