Busy farm and family life heading into an early spring

I was feeling like I was doing so well getting things accomplished but it seems like it went south on me! I have high hopes for a good work week coming up. I agreed to help review some grant applications for an agency thinking that it wouldn’t be too much, but they informed me they have 98 applications. I need to have my review and comments finished by the 8th. It is going to be tight because I also need to work on a video presentation on Growing Hops for a meeting in Sudbury that I cannot attend in person. The biggest struggle with that is videoing myself. I find that super uncomfortable. I will have to make sure Lexi is occupied otherwise she will be making her presence known as well. Those are the 2 major items, but I have a list of many other tasks as well. It isn’t easy to be sitting at the computer with the incredible weather we are experiencing. My bush trails are not great, but it is sure nice to be outside. I know most people don’t want to hear this, but it would be better if it was some cooler.

My mom and I trekked off to Thunder Bay last week for a Dr appt. We just did a day trip as the appt. was mid-day. Our only complaint was how much windshield washer we used otherwise the trip and roads were good for January. A couple mornings later she woke me with a call that she wasn’t feeling well so I quickly pulled some clothes on (barn clothes) and off I went. She had been lightheaded and did fall and cut her hand quite bad. By the time I got there she already had the laundry going. Anyway, off we went to the E.R. We had incredible service and other than stitches in her hand all her reports were good. We all think it might have been an increase in one of her meds. The point I am trying to get to was this – my mom called my cell phone, but it didn’t pop up until she called me on the cell until we were at the hospital for a couple of hours. It never rang. I keep on debating whether I should keep my $75 per month landline but this is a perfect example of why I should keep it. Thankfully my mom is feeling much better!

The elk are back in my hay again quite bad. Once again, we are trying all kind of measures to keep them out. I am shocked that with not much snow they are not content with the fields, but they seem to be able to pick out the best bales. Don’t need to feed test – just watch what bales they pick!

I am starting to think about when I need to move my cattle home but so far there isn’t anyone that makes me think I need to get in a big rush. You can see them starting to show some signs but nothing too serious. They are in such a great spot that I don’t want to rush them home to the yard. Lexi loves are walks to check on them. She has also been really enjoying our ducks. Maybe a bit too much as I found her with one pinned down. They seem to enjoy the rough play and miss her if she doesn’t come in the barn with me. Crazy bunch of animals I have. I hope you can get out and enjoy this weather!
