Break in the weather and in calving

Finally, we are getting a much-needed break in the weather. This really cuts the stress of cows calving outside when the temperatures return to a much more bearable number. Sunday in the bright sun was the first day that I didn’t have any calves. I am sure they thought it was too nice to calve and just wanted the day to soak up the rays. I had a very busy week of calves and meetings. I made it through and only have 17 left to come. Since last week I had another set of twins. The poor ole’ cow had twins last year on April 2 and managed to breed back quickly and carry another set of twins. She is feeling it though and was once one of my heaviest cows but she sure isn’t now. I will try and give her a bit more care to help her along. Her calves are a cute, little bouncy pair and I did cave and give them a bottle here and there to help take the pressure of momma. She is a good milking cow but when you have two babies at you all the time, you NEED to be good!

As I was feeding up on Tuesday, I was just heading to feed the sheep and I noticed I was getting a flat tire on my tractor. Of course, it was the big, loaded tire on the back of the tractor. I quickly dropped a bale in for the sheep and parked it. My boyfriend/partner wasn’t around that day as he had a medical appointment. I debated on telling him or just letting him find out once he returned. I told him. He was pretty sure it was because I had run over my jack-knife. I did not agree. We are fortunate to live close to Tony Flatt’s repair shop. He was heading over with his tractor to a neighbour’s, so he was able to swing in and take the tire with him back to his place. Another neighbour has a big, fancy impact that we were able to borrow and though I didn’t do the work, it seemed like it went well. The tire was back and repaired Friday night, just in time for the cows to be fed again. I am very thankful to have such great neighbours and my boyfriend/partner to deal with it as I was busy with calves.

Now that the lock-down is somewhat lifted, we are certainly hoping we can return to some in-person meetings. Both the Abattoir and Cattlemen’s have big projects on the go and the discussion is just not the same over the computer. I most times have decent internet but of course when you really need it is when it seems to be the worst!

Don’t forget to get your Riverside Tickets! Let’s keep that pot growing!

I was so busy with calves last week that I didn’t have a chance to wish my friend June a very happy birthday! She turned 92! I am hoping that once calves are closer to be finished that I can get away for a quick visit! Happy Birthday June!
