Wow, the beginning of September has arrived.
Really, our weather has been pretty incredible. The rain that we have had won’t matter much for our conditions this year, but it should help us out long term.
I have managed to keep my cows happy with the little bit of grass I have, but I am certain that this will end soon. I am considering selling my calves at our next sale on Sept. 26, even though I have always said: “stick to your plan.”
I have secured some hay to purchase, but now I need to get that home. My tractor is getting a wheel seal replaced, so then I plan to cut some hay and haul the other stuff home.
I have a calf with a large abscess that I have locked up with my butcher animals that is finally starting to drain. I was nervous about messing with her too much and causing more grief. They are not happy to be away from the rest of the cow herd, but I still think it is better to keep her close so I can at least keep an eye on her.
My heifers that I took to Emo and Dryden are now back being regular cows. They were not happy, but it was time. I try to keep them isolated for at least a week in case they picked up something at the fairs.
Friday was the last regular day with my summer staff. It made me very sad because I truly had a great summer with the girls. They were not only great workers but very good friends for me this summer. I am excited for them to head back to school, but I am going to miss them a lot.
We managed to get a lot of our trials harvested and even a fair bit of data completed. I am nervous about our canola. The heads are drying down, but the stems are very green. I wouldn’t be able to spray it as I would trample the plots, but a drone would work perfectly. I am going to talk to my boss about that.
Technology is amazing these days. I have so many weeds! If you are driving past, please don’t judge me. The most recent rainfall must have allowed every weed seed out there to germinate. I am hoping I can get some spraying down this week. I don’t think I remember seeing it this bad before.
I am in Guelph for a meeting this week. A lot is going on in the beef industry right now, and prices have slid down a bit. It is making everyone really nervous. I really hope things don’t keep going this way, as the little bit of rebuilding we have seen will be lost quickly.
People have waited a long time for things to improve, but with the increase in inputs, they won’t be able to stay if it takes a turn for the worse. Remember to shop local and look for food that is produced by your neighbours; you won’t be disappointed!
Reminder—the first cattle sale this fall is booked for September 26. Katie is our contact, but her baby is also due around that time, so if possible, reach out sooner rather than later!
