I had a touch of frost at home this morning, but it appears the Research Station missed it. That is often the case. I did take the time to cover some of my favorite flowers last night because it looks like we just have a couple of cool nights and then it is normal temperatures again. I picked a few pumpkins, but it doesn’t look like I have many to pick anyway. I might have to re-think my patch. I had it weed free and then the lamb’s quarter came back in full force, and I was busy haying to deal with that. I grew celery for Black Bettie, but now without Black Bettie I have to figure out what I will be doing with that. I always try to get my mom interested in dealing with my garden, but she doesn’t always bite. I have some really great looking Brussels sprouts, but according to my garden expert Susan, they need a couple of frosts before I harvest them.
At the station we will have to deal with our Three Sister’s produce and just from a few drive-bys; it looks as though we will have plenty of squash. I still have canola and soybeans to harvest but I would really like to get sprayed and get rid of the weeds that are doing so well since we had rain. I am still hoping that I might be able to get my canola sprayed to help with the green stems, but everyone is busy. We may have to work on getting the old combine going because it seemed to handle the green stems much better.
Our first cattle sale is coming up quickly. September 26 is the first of our fall run. We ended the year with some issues with our RFID Reader but we went the other day and connected with the company and have things back on track again. It was a memory issue, and my techie self couldn’t figure out how to deal with that on my own. Katie is once again looking after staffing and cattle numbers, so if you can please reach out to her and get your cattle booked in. Friends of the Abattoir are hosting a fundraising dinner and event on Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Stratton Millennium Hall. They are planning a prime rib and chicken dinner and a bunch of fun ways to raise some money. With all that is going on in the world right now, we really need to protect our access to local food. This is a great chance to do that. I also was thinking about it this way; for me I enjoy going out with a bunch of you and having a good time and supporting the abattoir, but by doing it this way I have a chance to win or bring home something I need or want as well.
