If you watch any US television, you are being overwhelmed with election advertising. And many non partisan advertisements are urging you to vote because the future of the US Democracy is on the line. In Fort Frances, voting began through on-line means and by using the telephone on Monday. The election in Fort Frances and other parts of the district is just as important or may be more important.
Municipal elections affect us every day. The mayors, reeves, and councillors are responsible to us for all the services that are provided. They make decisions about how streets and roads are plowed in winter. They make decisions about how much we will spend in our household budgets for water and sewer monthly. Councils make the final decisions on how much minor hockey will pay for an hour of ice time in our arenas. They will ultimately make the decisions on how much you will pay for burials. Everything that affects our daily lives is controlled by municipal councils.
Councillors across the district are continuing to face aging populations. They also must respond to the needs of young families whose children will be filling our schools. They must see the changing demographics as new immigrants move into our district bringing new customs while seeking to create new homes for their families. They must recognize the changing complexities of their communities.
In Fort Frances we have a great mixture of candidates for council old and young, male and female all bringing different perspectives to the table. The candidates night gave everyone an opportunity to watch, listen and make careful consideration as to who would best represent their family and community in the next four years.
Now is the time to make your voice heard. Now is the time to cast your ballot and help make the determination of what Fort Frances or the district will look like or feel four years from now. We are asking a lot of the candidates running in this election. It is clear that no candidate wants the community to stand still. They only ask for your vote and your vote will help Fort Frances, and the district to move forward.
