Covid can affect anybody

Up until two weeks ago, my wife and I could claim that we were Covid Free. While other friends and some family members admitted to catching the virus, we could celebrate our Covid Free status. It is not “If,” but rather” When” we will catch Covid. Eventually we will all catch the virus virologists tell us.

When each dose of vaccine became available, we rushed to receive it. We were among the first in the community to receive the bivalent vaccine. And we had remained Covid Free.

And then just before Thanksgiving we began travels. First to Calgary to enjoy the birthdays of our one- and three-year-old grand daughters. We remained pretty much isolated except for three outings to restaurants. We left Calgary healthy. Our grand children and their parents remained healthy.

Two days after arriving back in the Fort, we had to travel to the Toronto area for medical appointments. We were but a few of the passengers on the flight who chose to wear our masks. We wore them from the moment we stepped into Thunder Bay Airport until we sat in our rental vehicle leaving Pearson Airport.

We remained quite isolated, and the medical procedure was performed in a hospital that had strict Covid protocols. We felt safe. We continued to wear masks and be careful. We chose to stay with my sister and brother-in-law and that is when Covid reared its ugly head. That was three days after the procedure.

We had visited Marnie’s 99-year-old mother on Saturday and by Sunday, Marnie was feeling tired. A quick rapid test confirmed with two lines that Marnie was positive. Two days later I wore the second scarlet line. Stitches were to be removed at the Stouffville Hospital by the surgeon on Wednesday, but protocols forbid the entrance to the hospital.

Arrangements were made to meet a plastic surgeon in Thunder Bay on Thursday. We flew back to Thunder Bay but a look at the wound by the plastic surgeon indicated it was too early to removed stitches. Marnie had tested negative on that day.

Marnie’s sister-in-law in Waterloo tested positive on Thursday. We had transferred the virus.

We never experienced being anything more than a little tired. From the time we arrived home, I was able to comfortably work in the yard. Six days after testing positive, my rapid tests showed negative. The numbers of people coming down with Covid are on the rise again. The latest vaccine helps reduce how sick you will become. Similarly Canadian Health officials are expecting a sever flu season and the flu vaccines are now available.

Marnie and I have no idea of where we caught the Covid virus. We don’t know how many people we may have infected. And if you are not testing, you too could be transferring the virus.
