Newest outdoors store opens up

In all of the travelling that I do, I get to visit a bunch of fishing tackle shops.
If I see a sign for fishing gear, I’ll usually stop in. Some are great with jigs and lures that might be unique to a specific region, to go along with all the regular stuff that a good tackle store should have.
Others have a less than average selection and are quick in-and-out stops.
Lake of the Woods Sports Headquarters is Northwestern Ontario’s newest outdoors store. Owned by Bryan Gustafson, a good friend of mine (no relation) from Fort Frances, it is something he’s been working on for a few years.
And the hard work finally is paying off because he has a great store that he should be proud of.
Located on Highway 17 West in Kenora, LOTW Sports was done right. Bryan hired local carpenter Carson Reynolds to refinish the interior of his building with beautiful pine siding, to go along with some great-looking signs and woodwork from local carvers Jake and Eli Blosser.
The place is really nice inside!
Bryan’s background in the fishing tackle business comes from helping his parents, Greg and Shelley, run the fishing side of their business east of Fort Frances, The Great Bear, for the past few years.
This gave him the opportunity to learn the ropes on what sells, as well as make relationships with many of the manufacturers that he’s working with.
The selection of fishing and outdoor gear at LOTW Sports is top-notch, including hundreds of fishing rods and reels for every species you could ever think of catching in Sunset Country.
There also is a wide assortment of bass tackle for all types of fishing situations, so it sure to be a popular spot for area tournament anglers, as well as the many folks who visit our region to fish bass every year.
If you like to fish for musky, there is a whole wall dedicated to these toothy critters. Then there are the small baits for pan fish, lures for pike and lake trout, and a whole aisle full of fishing line.
Trolling motors, GPS units, and nets are stocked, as well.
In Northwestern Ontario, it’s been tough to find quality rain gear at a retail location where an angler can try something on before they buy. Now we have the option to do that.
For anglers who are going fishing in any weather condition, having quality rain gear is a must.
There also is all kinds of fishing branded T-shirts, hoodies, and hats.
Finally, there is a selection of hunting gear, high-quality boots, and clothing, with much more stock to come before the fall season rolls around.
The reason this place is so good is that Bryan is a fisherman. Along with partner Jamie Bruce, they won the 2014 Kenora Bass International tournament.
Over the last several years, he has spent a lot of time on our area lakes so he knows what catches fish in our part of the world. The staff is made up of anglers, as well, so if you are shopping and have a question about what the fish are biting on, these guys certainly will be able to help you out.
If you get the opportunity to drop by LOTW Sports Headquarters and do a little shopping, you’ll definitely be able to find what you’re looking for.
The prices are as good as you’ll find anywhere so they are making it easy is to shop local.
