The Prairie Garden is central and western Canada’s only gardening annual. The articles are written by experienced gardeners of the prairie provinces and northwestern Ontario, many with multiple decades of gardening experience. Many of the Committee members and volunteer writers, make or have made their living in the plant science and/or horticulture sectors. Each annual publication, is like having a semester of university level, gardening courses wrapped up into a compendium of thorough but easy to read, notes and pictures that are tailored to the challenges and demands of Canada’s northern climate.
As always, The Prairie Garden aims to be a guide for gardeners of all skill levels, in the short-season gardening zones, of Canada. The 2021 edition, has more than articles and hundreds of photos offering information from all aspects of nature’s inspiration including dealing with climate change, low maintenance and pollinator friendly gardens, new planting principles, and numerous gardening techniques and tips shared by the expert contributors. I can guarantee, this publication will keep even the most experienced gardener busy reading all through the winter months.
Each year, a theme is chosen and the Prairie Garden Committee, of volunteers, works hard to solicit articles related to the theme. The dedicated volunteers put forth endless hours of volunteer time to ensure the content of the periodical is accurate and informative, and that the final draft is aesthetically pleasing as well as meticulous in its information. Printed fully in colour, featuring photos, graphics and illustrations complementing most articles, this soft-cover book is very professionally crafted and top quality. This is what the dedicated readers of the “The Prairie Garden” have come to expect over the years. I have had the honour and pleasure of being invited to contribute to and be involved with the “The Prairie Garden” since the 2011 edition. You will find “Gardening Guru” articles published in the 2011, 2013, 2014, 2018, 2019 editions and 2021 edition.
This digest is an informative purchase that will make a great stocking stuffer for any gardener from beginner to expert. Most years, the publication registers on the McNally Robinson Booksellers Top Ten list. Imagine how happy the gardener in your life will be, when the 2021 issue arrives by mail, in the next few weeks or pops out of the stocking on Christmas morning. A reminder when ordering that back issues are always available for immediate shipping as well. This is useful if you want to building your collection of other editions, as they are informative must reads and provide continuous reference information. The 2019 edition “Growing Food”, has been reprinted due to overwhelming demand, so if you are a vegetable or fruit grower you may want to get this back copy for your library.
