The New Railway. Work On the Ontario & Rainy River Road Progressing At Both Ends. A Through Line Before Another Year is Out. Fort Frances the Present Terminus.

Rainy Lake Herald

Commenced At Last.

We are informed from a reliable source that Mr. White, Engineer for McKenzie & Mann, is now at work with a large force staking out the roadway for the Ontario & Rainy River Railway. The party are now at work where the line diverts from the P.A.D. & W.R’y and will rush the line with all possible speed. Work of construction will begin at once and will be vigorously prosecuted until snow flies. It is the intention to build as far as Fort Frances under the present legislative and federal grants. This is good news to the people of the Seine River and Rainy River districts and will be a great factor in developing the great commercial wealth of these districts.

As if to confirm the news of the immediate construction of the road, Wm. McCarthy, of Winnipeg, formerly assistant engineer on construction work, section B of the C.P.R., has been sent by McKenzie and Mann and is up here with an outfit. We understand he will proceed at once to Hay Marsh hay and will locate or ascertain the most feasible and practical route for the Ontario & Rainy River Railway between Fort Frances and the Seine. When seen by the HERALD, Mr. McCarthy was non committal as to what his plans of operation were but from what could be gathered it is safe to say that the construction to the road will be proceeded with at once and will be completed between Port Arthur and Fort Frances without delay. Engineer White is now at work with a large force of men at the eastern end as before stated and ere long our Canadian neighbours will have a direct line east and west.
