BARRY ANTON SILANDER

It is with deep sadness that the family of Barry Anton Silander announces his passing. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, May 4, 2014 at his residence.
Barry was born Oct. 17, 1947 in Emo, Ont. to the late Walter and Meryl Silander.
Barry spent all his life living in the district, including in Atikokan from 1966-70. Barry was a trucker and was very proud of achieving more than two million safe driving miles while on the job.
He was a stock car and NASCAR enthusiast, and heading to the Emo Speedway was one of his passions.
He also enjoyed his coffee time with his family and friends, and liked to read until he lost his sight.
His greatest pride was his children and grandchildren’s achievements.
The grandkids posed challenges to Barry, which he accepted and fulfilled, which enabled the family to enjoy another year with him.
Barry was united in marriage on March 4, 1967 to the former Grace Mitchell, who survives along with his sons, Gary (Andrea) of Fort Frances, Ont. and Brent (Michelle) of Dryden, Ont.; and special daughter, Sherryl (Elaine) of Sechelt, B.C.
Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, Tylyn, Teanna, Megan, Ben, and Paige; sister, Karen Tiffin of Stratton, Ont.; brother, Don (Janet) of Ear Falls, Ont.; brother-in-law, Philip (Karen) Mitchell of Devlin, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Meryl; and mother- and father-in-law, Ruth and Adam Mitchell.
A celebration of Barry’s life will be held Friday, May 9, 2014 from 2-4 p.m. at the Memorial Sports Centre in Fort Frances, with Pastor Diane Clifford officiating.
The honourary pallbearers will be all of Barry’s family and friends.
