A Kyle Auger goal just past the 16-minute mark of the second period proved to be the winner as the Thunder Bay North Stars edged the Fort France Lakers 2-1 in SIJHL action Friday night at the Fort William Gardens.
The North Stars got off to a quick start, opening the scoring just 78 seconds into the game as Brendan Gillis notched his fourth of the season.
Auger’s goal in the second upped the host’s cushion to two as he also netted his fourth marker of the year.
With his goal, Auger now has points in all 10 games the North Stars (9-0-1-0) have played this season.
The Lakers (5-5-0-0) finally solved North Stars’ goalie Brock Aiken with just over seven minutes to go in regulation time as Isaac Baron picked up his second of the season.
Ethan Knutsen and Cole Allan drew the assists.
The Lakers pulled goalie Jacob Gnidziejko late in an effort to try and force overtime–to no avail.
Allan took a boarding penalty with 1:01 to go, forcing Gnidziejko to stay between the pipes for the rest of the game.
Shots on goal were even at 38 apiece.
The Lakers next are in action this Friday (Oct. 26) when they host those same North Stars at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Then they’ll cap their week the following night by facing Thief River Falls Norskies at 7 p.m. at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
