Keeping our communities safe and reducing violent crime is a priority for the federal government.
This is why, in his mandate letter, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asked Bill Blair, the minister of Border Security and Organized Crime Reduction, to lead an examination of a ban on handguns and assault weapons in Canada while not impeding the lawful use of firearms by Canadians.
From now until Nov. 10, Canadians will be able to share their views online on how we can reduce violent crime related to handguns and assault weapons.
This online engagement will complement roundtables and discussions with stakeholders, experts, and all Canadians over the coming weeks.

“I am glad to see that these important consultations are moving forward,” said local MP Don Rusnak.
“This is an issue that I have received plenty of passionate feedback on from our community members, both in support of greater firearm control and against.
“When a policy is this polarizing in our community, I believe it is important for us to have an open, fact-based discussion on its merits and drawbacks,” he added.
“The safety of Canadians is top priority for this government, and we are prepared to hear from stakeholders and experts who represent the complete spectrum of views surrounding the issue of firearm use.
“Both the online consultation, as well as stakeholder meetings across the country, will provide an excellent opportunity to help inform future measures aimed at reducing violent crimes in Canada,” Rusnak noted.
