Point Park to host training exercise

Staff

The Point Park will be the site of a military training exercise next month.
Town council will receive a recommendation from the Operations and Facilities executive committee to allow use of the park from Jan. 26-28 for an exercise by the 116th Independent Field Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery.
In a report from Community Services manager Jason Kabel, he noted the group wants to set up tents and spend two nights practising winter survival and other drills as part of their ongoing training program.
The office building there also will be made available as an information centre, as the 116th Independent Field Battery is looking to recruit while informing residents on what they do and what sort of equipment they use.
If council approves of the recommendation, Mayor Roy Avis and clerk Lisa Slomke then will be authorized to enter into a land use agreement for the duration of the exercise.
The committee of the whole will meet first at 5:30 p.m., with no in-camera items on its agenda.
Other business on tonight’s agenda includes:
•a presentation by local resident Stan Hoard re: the health hazards of smoke from burning wood;
•awarding of a tender for the provision of janitorial services at the museum, Children’s Complex, library, Public Works, Civic Centre, and Sister Kennedy Centre;
•a recommendation re: a letter from resident Carole Mackintosh about snow removal on Scott Street;
•a recommendation re: the Sister Kennedy Centre name change;
•a financial request from “Meals on Wheels”;
•a report on student wages going up in 2018; and
•a recommendation re: a donation to the 2017 community Christmas dinner.
