Top citizen to be named

Who will be the 2017 “Citizen of the Year?”
The answer to that question will be revealed at tonight’s town council meeting.
The new “Citizen of the Year” will be honoured during a presentation starting at 6 p.m.
Last month, the town put out a call for nominations and received a healthy response of 11 nominations for eight separate individuals.
After the Oct. 26 deadline, the nominations were submitted to the “Citizen of the Year” selection committee, comprised of Mayor Roy Avis, Couns. Wendy Brunetta and Paul Ryan, Fort Frances CAO Doug Brown, and citizens Darlyss Krienke, Rick Wiedenhoeft, and Irene Laing.
That committee then forwarded its choice to council at its Nov. 13 meeting.
But council’s receipt of the report was made in-camera so as to maintain the element of surprise for tonight’s meeting, when the top citizen will be honoured in person.
Ruth Caldwell was the 2016 “Citizen of the Year.”
Also at tonight’s meeting, Fort Frances Public Library CEO Caroline Goulding and library board chair Andrew Hallikas will make a presentation regarding the recent library survey results.
As well, more community members will be presented with “Canada 150” volunteer pins starting at 7 p.m.
The committee of the whole will meet first at 5:30 p.m., with no in-camera items on its agenda.
Other business on tonight’s agenda includes:
•a request from the local Alzheimer Society to proclaim January as “Alzheimer Awareness Month” in the Town of Fort Frances;
•a request from 93.1 The Border re: a Christmas greeting advertising opportunity;
•a letter from Police Services Board chair John McTaggart re: Point Park concerns;
•a letter from Jamie Petrin, community homeless liaison, re: a temporary overnight emergency shelter;
•a letter from Dr. Kit Young-Hoon, medical office of health for the Northwestern Health Unit, re: the municipal alcohol policy; and
•a letter from resident Carole Mackintosh re: snow removal on Scott Street.
