Parade date, theme chosen

Whether it’s candy canes, sugar plums, cookies, or chocolate, the holidays are all about sweets.
It’s only fitting then that the theme for the 2017 “Community Christmas Parade,” set for Saturday, Dec. 2, is “Christmas Candyland.”
Parade co-ordinator Scott Krienke-Turvey is enthusiastic about spearheading the event for a third year, but could use a helping hand with one specific aspect of this year’s parade.
“I’m hoping to get a service group or a club to take over Santa Claus’ float,” he noted.
“Doing the float for a couple days before, as well as directing the parade and everything, I need help,” added Krienke-Turvey, noting a small budget is provided for that particular float.
A parade needs other floats, of course. Those wishing to enter one are asked to pre-register by e-mailing ffsanta2017@gmail.com
A parade also needs volunteers, including traffic control to watch the intersections and make sure traffic doesn’t drive through the procession.
While it’s likely some sports teams will take on security duty at the intersections, Krienke-Turvey said it wouldn’t hurt to have some adults to help supervise, as well.
Other jobs include float judges, as well as putting up some signs the day before and then taking them down afterwards.
Those who want to volunteer can e-mail ffsanta2017@gmail.com and ask organizers what tasks are needed to be done, or tell them which ones you’d like to do.
Organizers will try and match the right volunteers with the right jobs.
Krienke-Turvey also is welcoming donations.
“Donations of candy and small treats would be great, especially since the theme is ‘candy,'” he noted.
The parade once again will start at 5:30 p.m. at Reid Avenue and proceed west along Scott Street, ending at Mowat Avenue.
Krienke-Turvey noted this means the public will be able to park on the 100 block of Scott Street, including the parking lot by From the Grind Up.
